How to Contact a Librarian for Reference/Research Assistance

A team of Librarians supports MAU LIRN Portal through the LIRN Librarian Service. For research and reference assistance, students and faculty can contact a team of LIRN Librarians by clicking on the “Ask a Librarian” link on the right side of the LIRN Portal page and complete the help request form. Librarians can follow up via email, phone call, or screen-share as applicable.

Research

Google Scholar

Is a virtual library of archived peer-reviewed articles and professional journal publications. Some articles and publications are in abstract version only, which requires a subscription or payment for download. Papers can be accessed by topic or author and may contain cross-references and updates. This database can provide a good source for “keywords” to use on other sites.

Florida Electronic Library (FEL)

Is directly accessible for MAU students or via the MAU library page, Electronic Resources. This site is sponsored by the State of Florida Library and offers access to GALE databases, state records and special resources, such as, Demographics Now for Florida specific research categories, small business resources, e-Books, and career and job resources. For an individual response Ask-a-Librarian is also available online 24/7 from FEL.

Is an organization that partners with multiple research institutions and academic libraries to share and preserve classic and scholarly works.

The Wall Street Journal Digital Network (WSJDN) includes some of the best known Business/Finance news with unique perspectives; The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), MarketWatch, Barron’s, and AllThingsD.

Is America’s premier financial magazine, providing daily market insight and information.

Features exclusive columns, videos, and insights for businesses and consumers.

FindLaw

Is a free site providing facts on legal information and general topics with professional referrals through other connected commercial sites.

Creative Commons

Is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge by users through the use of free legal tools.

Bloomberg Business (BusinessWeek)

Is one of the most well-known financial websites and provider of financial news, markets data, and personal financial tools.

Small Business Administration (SBA)

Provides information and regulations pertaining to the U.S. Small Business Administration. This site covers topics such as, governing laws, contracts, exports, human resource (HR) regulation and finance with scheduled online workshops and training webinars.

Government Resources

GPO-Federal Publication

Is the virtual program for government pamphlets which provides access to the Virtual Download editions of all U.S. handout materials pertaining to any Federal Program: Tax information, agriculture, health, social security, housing, Veteran Programs (V.A.), Justice department, armed services programs, Pentagon, etc.

Florida Citizen’s Access State Portal

Provides official descriptions of the programs and forms for state level programs. Topics include: assistance, and data systems, tax information, environmental programs, real estate programs, tolls, business and state government news. This site also provides the state program registrations and regulations.

Miami Dade Public Library System

Is the Public Library System of Miami-Dade County. Students residing in Miami-Dade County for more than 60 days are considered residents and eligible to receive a free Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) library card. Library cardholders can access eBooks via the Online Book Page, and check them out via download through Overdrive for limited time checkouts. Cardholders may also use other databases for permanent book versions. This site has access to Zinia and Flipster for magazine downloads, to World Book, for eBook fiction and nonfiction books, and a link to OneClickDigital, a website subscription that provides access to e-audio music.

Federal Digital Information System

Is the official U.S. Government Publishing Office (GOP) site containing links to all the Federal government information available at no cost to the public, most of which is available for download. This site includes a catalog of U.S. government publication, guides to services, maps, books, journals, and historical records. Federal Government information is made available for free public use in Federal depository libraries providing access to public records.

Library of Congress

Is the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is the largest library in the world, with millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps, and manuscripts in its collections. The library is open to the public, but only high-ranking government officials may check out books and materials.

Education

ERIC Institute of Education Sciences

Is the official site for the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), an online digital library of education research and information. ERIC is sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the United States Department of Education. Its mission is to provide a comprehensive, easy-to-use, searchable, Internet-based bibliographic and full-text database of education research and information for educators, researchers, and the general public, for the purpose of improving teaching, learning, and educational decision-making. ERIC provides access to 1.5 million bibliographic records (citations, abstracts, and other pertinent data) of journal articles and other education-related materials, with record updates weekly. Here is another useful website. Much is available in full text. Materials with no full text (primarily journal articles) can often be accessed using links to publisher websites. The ERIC Collection, begun in 1966, contains a variety of publication types, including: books, journal articles, conference papers, technical reports, resources, dissertations, and education materials.

For the Citation Style Guide for writing papers, visit the librarian at the reference desk for help or reference the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (BF 76.7.P83) or Modern Language Association Handbook (BF 76.7 .P83); these are guides for writers of term papers and dissertations. These reference materials may be checked out at the library desk. Links for the APA Style Manual and the MLA Handbook can be accessed via the main LIRN page using MAU passwords with the above terms in the search box.

The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL)

Is the online writing lab at Purdue University, housing writing resources and instructional materials provided as a free service from the Writing Lab at Purdue. There are informational guides to assist students in writing papers. OWL uses the comprehensive American Psychological Associations’ APA Style Guidelines, which meets the course specific standards for MAU class assignment requirements.

Florida Department of Education

Is a government news site from the state of Florida Education Department, where current news, Florida institutions’ policy announcements, or state academic program information, as well as, career resources, continuing education, certifications, and links to the virtual school programs and events, can be obtained. This site also has guides for parenting support and training.

General Library Sites

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)

Links to liberal arts databases and is open to public archived sources. The DPLA is considered a professional alternative to Google by many academic institutions. As a work in progress, it includes new formats that link to 10 million authentic images, print resources and artifact items from academic libraries, across a broad range of topics and disciplines.

Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC)

Is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research site, for information on print books, ISBN, publishers, editions, location of books in local libraries. Through the FEL, Florida Electronic Library, using +Cengage resources, print books available for interlibrary loan can be located through links to local libraries collections. For other ways to connect via OCLC, access Google Books and commercial sites, such as Amazon or (betterworldbooks.com) for OCLC links.

Project Gutenberg

Offers over 49,000 free eBooks. Users can choose among free epub books, free kindle books, download them or read them online. This site carries high quality ebooks. All ebooks were previously published by bona fide publishers, not self-publishers. Editors have digitized and diligently proofread them, with the help of thousands of volunteers. No fee or registration is required. Over 100,000 free eBooks are available through their partners, their affiliates and linked resources. They also provide archives of “public domain” literature, classic works of Arts and Science materials, and copies of historical works.

Open Library

Is an open, editable library archive catalog that includes self-published works. This open access model has the inclusive goal of building towards a web page for every book published. The format and content is open source edited.

Library Policies

MAU Library Mission Statement

The mission of Millennia Atlantic University Library is to serve the university’s uniquely diverse community of students and faculty. In order to meet the informational needs of the university community, the library will build and maintain an appropriate offline and online collection that effectively supports the curriculum and will actively assist users in utilizing the full extent of library resources.

Library Borrowing Policies & Privileges
  • Borrowing privileges are limited to Millennia Atlantic University students, faculty, and staff. A valid MAU identification card must be shown in order to check out materials.
  • Books can be checked out for a period of two (2) weeks. Books can be renewed once.
  • Failure to return an overdue item will result in the suspension of borrowing privileges for the student until the book is returned.
  • If an item is overdue for more than thirty (30) days, it will be considered lost.
  • If an item is lost or damaged, the student will be charged for the price of the item.
Technology Use

Fifteen (15) wireless computers are available in the Library and adjoining Room 314. These are for student use to do assignments and research and limited to 90 minutes if another patron are waiting. The librarian will also set up with wireless Internet access those students that would like to use their own personal computers.

Library has a printer/copier available for school applications. This can be accessed from the library computers or a jump drive. (Students must use a personal debit or credit card to print or copy documents).

 

Donations

A gift of books or other materials are accepted as another way to strengthen the library collection. These materials must be in good condition and support the curriculum at Millennia Atlantic University.

All gifts of library materials become property of the library. Any materials not added to the collection will be sold or donated. The librarian will determine whether the gift will be retained.
